Working Together to Care for You
At PCH, we take a team approach with our pulmonary rehabilitation program, which involves several healthcare providers in different medical disciplines working together to improve the quality of life for patients by:
- Controlling and lessening the symptoms and complications of breathing problems
- Increasing level of independence and physical activity a patient enjoys
- Reducing the need for hospitalization
Pulmonary rehab combines the best of pulmonology with the strength of behavioral medicine and utilizes the fundamental connection of mind, body and spirit. Most important, it encourages patients to take an active role in their own health through:
- Exercise conditioning
- Strength training
- Daily living activities
- Education about healthy living
- Discovering coping strategies for stress
- Being open to receiving emotional support
Your pulmonary rehab program team may consist of your:
- Primary Care Provider
- Medical Director
- Pulmonologist
- Physical and/or Occupational Therapy
- Respiratory Therapy

- Social Services
- Dietitian

Ways Pulmonary Rehab Can Help
There are a number of different conditions appropriate for pulmonary rehabilitation:
- Asthma
- Chronic bronchitis
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Emphysema
- Lung cancer
- Lung transplant / resection
- Occupational and environmental lung diseases
Patients will receive an individualized treatment plan designed around their specific needs. The plan is developed jointly among the patient and the healthcare professionals providing your treatment. Most patients complete treatment within 6-8 weeks, with two to three visits occurring per week.
